The government has recently implemented a range of programs and scholarships to help and encourage students to study. However, these have only been to study physically in the colleges and universities, rather than online. Although there have been some statistics of individuals learning online from other online universities and colleges from around the world, this is not a common practice yet.
Education has always been a high priority for the Portuguese government and society, and formal education was introduced in the country even before its independence in the 12th century. Initially religious schools were the only source for education in Portugal, but later primary and secondary schools were established, and the University of Coimbra, one of the oldest universities in the world, was established in 1290.
Basic education has been compulsory in Portugal since 1911. Basic education provided in Portuguese schools continues for 8 years and are is divided into stages. After completion of 3 years of courses a Certificate or Diploma is awarded. Secondary education is given over 3 years, and is provided at all private, public and cooperative schools. The courses are available in two types: general and technical or vocational education.
